Presence and Awareness, while distinct, are inseparable in practice. They work together to create a state of mindful engagement with our lives:

  • Presence is the state of being fully engaged in the current moment.
  • Awareness is the ability to notice and recognize what is happening within that moment

Think of Presence as the canvas and Awareness as the ability to perceive the details of the painting. One provides the context, the other the content.

  • Letting go of distractions and multi-tasking

Awareness

  • Noticing physical sensations, emotions, and thoughts
  • Recognizing patterns in our behavior and reactions
  • Observing our environment and interactions with others

Cultivating the Presence-Awareness Diad

Practices to develop this diad often nurture both aspects simultaneously:

  • Mindful breathing: Being present with the breath (Presence) while noticing its qualities (Awareness)
  • Body scan meditation: Bringing attention to the body (Presence) and noticing sensations (Awareness)
  • Mindful walking: Engaging fully in the act of walking (Presence) while observing the experience (Awareness)
